One of the little things we like to do as a family is rent movies from Netflix. We started doing this about a year ago and I like it a whole lot better than Blockbuster because I can order exactly what we want to see, they’re always in stock, and I don’t have to worry about late fees.
We sat down this weekend and watched the movie Evan Almighty, the story of a newly elected Congressman who asks God to help him change the world and then sees God actually take him up on it by transforming him into a modern-day version of Noah. It was so cute, we actually watched it twice. A good clean movie with a good message.
One scene toward the end of the movie really got me thinking. Evan is on the ark, having just saved hundreds of his neighbors and critics from drowning in a massive flood (I’ll be minimal here in the description in case you haven’t seen it and would like to.) As they ride the crest of the flood into the heart of D.C., everyone on board watches in horror as they see that the current is taking them straight toward a major bridge and it’s certain that in seconds, the ark is going to be splintered into a million pieces.
Evan, remembering how the staff he holds was able to lead the animals onto the ark two by two by just raising it up, stands at the helm of the ship and lifting his rod in a Moses-esque pose, he shouts out in a booming voice, “I command this ark to turn!”
When it’s obvious that nothing’s happening, he yells to God, “A little help here please?”
How many times do I find myself doing exactly what Evan did – everything seems to be working, so I’m in control, right? I can handle things. It only takes a second though to realize that we aren’t the ones in control. God is, and always will be. I’m so thankful for that!
I think one of the most dangerous places we can be is when we’re following God’s will. That’s right, when we’re following God’s will. Because no sooner do we take those one or two steps forward in His direction, do we think, hey, I’m walking! Like a toddler learning to walk for the first time, we start getting excited and overconfident and it doesn’t take long for us to start losing our balance and reach out for that steady hand of God’s to guide us back to steady strides. That happened to Evan – after fighting God for so long on building the ark, he finally accepted what God wanted him to do and then was thrilled to see things fall into place -like the animals helping finish the ark when everyone else bailed. Evan was taking those first couple of steps and by the time he was facing that bridge with all of those people standing behind him, he thought, maybe I can do this. But it wasn’t the “I” that was doing it. It was God and as always, He proved Himself faithful.
So, as you’re starting your week this week, keep in mind that you don’t have to do life alone. God is right there and He is in control. All you have to do is ask for a little help.

On a side note, Happy New Year! I am sorry I have been neglectful of this blog but I have been enjoying the Christmas holiday and school break with my husband and our son. Cliff took off the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s and we had a very much needed time of rest and relaxation. It was great. I hope your holidays were wonderful too! More blogging later…
