Hey mom: need encouragement?

dotMom

We have exactly one week yesterday that my son starts back to school. I don’t know about any of you, but I am ready! While I love the less hectic pace of summer time for my son, it makes my scheduling for writing, ministry (and yes, blogging), so, so much harder. I do so much better with routine (and 6 hours of uninterrupted focus). I can focus on work when Caleb’s at school, and I can focus on Caleb the rest of the time. Makes for a much happier mama.

Speaking of happy mamas… I want to invite you to an awesome conference I just found out I have the privilege of taking part in! LifeWay has started a new conference called dotMom. I believe their first year was last year – I have a great friend, Dori, who went and LOVED it. She said if you can go, you absolutely need to go! So I’m excited that I get to go to their next one which is September 21-22 in Birmingham! Yay! So what can you expect? I’m so glad you asked!

What’s Your Image Say About You?

yourimage

Do you ever care about what people think about you? What your image looks like to others? I think if we’re honest, most of us would say we do. But the real question might be – is the image people see, and who I really am, the one and the same?

Kim Kardashian was in the news a few weeks ago for an interview she did with Oprah, talking about a new relationship. In the interview she said something interesting that was quoted a lot on radio. Here’s what she said:

“If someone were to look at me, they see rich girl, parties all day, sex tape, parties at night, you would think this crazy wild person for me. I hardly drink, I go to church on Sundays, every Sunday, I mean I’m so far removed from my image. That is a part of me though, that all happened, that all is me, but there’s such a different side…”

My first thought was, how can you be satisfied with an image that isn’t you? But what  she said also reminded me of an experience I had several years ago when I attended a speaker’s training in Atlanta for my job. I was one of the youngest there. Everyone else participating in the sessions were high-level business executives, ready to improve their speaking to make the next deal, to take their leadership to the next level. I was certainly the only one there to try and improve my speaking for ministry. I was an odd duck – and it showed.

5 Ways to Show Your Spouse is Important

What would you say the hardest thing about marriage is? The wedding, or what happens after? As much hard work and preparation goes into the wedding planning – it’s what we do with our marriage after all of the guests have gone home that’s the most important. Just like our cars will fail if we don’t keep them maintained, so will our marriages if we don’t make them priorities.

It isn’t easy, is it? We have jobs and careers to think about, bills and financial pressures. And when children enter the picture, it’s a whole different story. We’re tempted to let our marriages run on auto-pilot while we deal with everything else. Strong marriages don’t happen by accident.

That’s where I was 7 years ago. We were married for almost 7 years at that point, and I was focused on everything else but my husband.

50 Shades of Grey Choices

50 Shades of One Bad Choice

It was just hanging there.

The sweet citrus aroma greeted her before she saw it, and as she inhaled, she closed her eyes, enjoying it.

Her eyes refocused and took it all in. She admitted, it looked perfect. Beautiful tones. Luscious, juicy, and tasty. Just the right size, just the right shape. She had not seen another like it anywhere. It was perfect. And she wanted it.

50 Shades of One Bad Choice

There was just one problem.
God said no.

She didn’t like that word. “No” meant no fun. It felt like she was fenced in, and frankly, she wasn’t used to that feeling. There was so much she could do in this beautiful place – why was this gorgeous thing off limits?

Was God trying to punish her by keeping this wonderfulness out of her grasp?

Didn’t He want her to be happy?

And besides, didn’t He make this handsome yumminess too? Why was it so wrong that she wanted to just appreciate it? Really, she was just giving credit to God by enjoying it. Wasn’t she?

Here it is!

Thought I’d share with you what’s been keeping me away for the most part all summer long – my new Bible study, Tour of Duty: Preparing Our Hearts for Deployment! -

It’s now available on LifeWay’s website for pre-orders and comes out this fall. I am so excited to share this with other military wives – this study walks through the hard emotions we so often experience going through deployment and how we can overcome them by staying focused on the One who brings us through this journey. It can be done both as an individual and with a group. I pray it’s a blessing and an encouragement to many who are going through these seasons away from their husbands.

My first deployment was wrecked – and I do mean wrecked with emotion. The emotions of Cliff leaving, the emotions of being by myself, juggling home and child, the emotions of the fears and the worries and just the weariness that can so often hit you as you go through it. And it occurred to me much later, even after I wrote GOD Strong, how I had spent so much time preparing in every way for deployment except spiritually, and yet that was the most important way I could prepare.

So that’s how Tour of Duty was born – I wanted, for myself, a study – a tool to take me through the Bible and God’s truth - that would help me get ready for deployment and something I could refer to as well when I’m in the thick of it. I’m praying it’s a help to other wives as well.

This was definitely one of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on, mainly because of the tight deadline we were working with and my own changing situation, going from writing at home to working a 40 hour work week and then writing in the evenings. I’m grateful for the LifeWay Women’s team and all of the time and energy (and patience) they put into this project and me. Compared to the audience for the other Bible studies they do (anyone ever hear of a lady named Beth Moore? :) ), this is a small niche but they saw the importance and the necessity to have a study like this out there for military wives. I, for one, as a military wife, am deeply thankful. If you are too, you may want to stop over at their blog and let them know! I’m sure they would love to hear from you.

Before I close, let me just tell you that as we get ready to start our own deployment soon (this is our second), I’m so grateful I can share this journey with my sister Wives of Faith! These ladies are such an encouragement and an inspiration to me and I’m so excited about the plans we have for a new website and message board that’s coming soon. We have a new weekly newsletter and in my columns I’ve started writing about our experience as Cliff prepares to leave for another tour, this time to South America. If you’re not getting the newsletter, let me encourage you to sign up and we can go through this journey together.

I’ll try and post more updates as they come. In the meantime, go ahead and get your copy of Tour of Duty! :)

Your Family Live

I enjoyed chatting with the hosts of Your Family Live this past Wednesday. I think Focus on the Family is really on to something wonderful with this live webcast format so let me encourage you to tune into their show which airs live every Wednesday.

Here’s the archive of the show if you missed it live. I’ve enjoyed hearing from folks who tuned in. Hope this encourages you as well.

My FOTF Interview

Can I take my “professional” hat off for a minute and offer a little squeal? EEEEEEEEEEE! My interview with Focus on the Family is now live on their website and will be aired today on all of their radio station outlets. I’m so grateful and honored to have been able to go out to Colorado Springs and visit with Jim, John and Julie and it was a treat this morning to hear my friend Pattie’s voice (Our Wives of Faith blog editor) in the show’s introduction.

My prayer is that many military wives and families listening to the interview today will be encouraged and that other folks, including churches, will be encouraged to reach out and make a difference in the lives of military families living around them and in their communities.

If you’re visiting my website for the first time because of hearing the Focus on the Family interview, welcome, and thank you so much for stopping by. Please let me know you were here by commenting or signing my guestbook. Also, be sure to check out Wives of Faith - we have some great encouraging articles and a growing community of wives I know you’ll want to be a part of.

TOMORROW – I’ll be live with Focus on the Family’s new weekly webcast, Your Family Live, and we’ll be talking more about living the military life in God’s strength and not our own. Hope you’ll join me and the others who will be participating.

Praising God today for the opportunities He’s given me to share Him with others. He overwhelms me.
