From my reading this morning:
“This is the way God works. Over and over again, He pulls our souls back from certain destruction so we’ll see the light – and live in the light!”
- Job 33:29-30 (The Message)
I am thankful this morning that God, in His incredible wisdom, uses hard experiences to bring us closer to Him.
This verse reminds me of the ongoing saga of the Israelites I’ve read about in the first half of the Old Testament (for those of you who don’t know, I’m attempting to read the Bible through in a year which will be my first time to do so). How many times have they seen God come through for them in a pinch, only to worry and fret the next time they’re challenged with something?
This verse also reminds me of all of my own fretting and worrying I do, even though, just like the Israelites, I have seen His hand, over and over, pull me and my family through. I am gradually getting better at trusting more, and whining less. I have learned recently the lesson of waiting. There is a richness to it, which I think I’ll write about this week.
But for now, let me leave you with a couple of questions: how has God pulled you back from destruction over the past year? Can you think of the ways?
Thank Him today for His love and His mercy. It is ever new.

I too am reading through the Bible in a year, my first time, I’m doing good so far, but it is still January. Isn’t it amazing how God laid out each step, do this and this will happen, do THIS and THIS will happen, (I’m in Leviticus) yet, they didn’t heed His words and the consequences were delivered. They were whiney, confused and did not trust.
If we follow His will, we will always be ok.
Thanks for the reminder today.
God has directed our paths in such a way this last year that, looking back, we are assured that God directed our steps. We left full time military so that my husband could attend seminary to become a Chaplain. We have been through many struggles; unemployment, bill collectors and threats of foreclosure, but God has pulled us through, we are catching up and we know that we are on the right path.
Proverbs 16:9 comes to mind, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
Hi Marylu! Thanks for your comments. We need good chaplains in our military and the chaplain’s wife has no less of a role to play as well! Thank you for you and your husband’s service!
