It’s easy for fear to creep in before you realize what is happening, and just as hard to know what to do when it does. One of the primary ways Satan defeats God’s people is through fear. Fear of failure, fear of inadequacy, fear of disappointment, fear of the unknown…. I have personally struggled with all of these over the last several months. Maybe you have too.
Here’s the good news: when we give our lives to Christ, we no longer have anything to fear! Our Heavenly Father is who we can depend on – do not believe the enemy’s lies that say otherwise!
“For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!”” ~ Romans 8:15
When Fear Creeps In, Speak Truth Out
When you feel fear creeping in, SPEAK OUT! Use God’s words of truth – I’ve listed 20 scriptures below, and I’ve even created a free printable of four you can use – highlight these verses in your Bibles, hang them in your car, display them in your office, tape them in your closet, post them in your kitchen (mine is on my fridge), write them on your bathroom mirror, add them to your favorite scripture memory app – here’s mine – read them when you’re in the bathtub – shoot, if you can make it waterproof, hang them in the shower! <= I would TOTALLY LOVE TO SEE THIS, BY THE WAY!
Where Do You Look?
It doesn’t escape me that this year I was determined to have no fear, and for almost the entire first half of 2015, I’ve been completely paralyzed with it. In fact, I even wrote a post about it but never published it. There are reasons why my fears got the best of me and circumstances that overwhelmed me, but the truth of why I struggled to overcome fear for so long is that just like Peter did in Matthew 14:22-33, when he stepped out of the boat to go to Jesus, I took my eyes off the Savior and only saw the storm.
Have you been there? Have you struggled with fear this year too? Are you struggling now? I don’t pretend even to myself that my struggle with fear is completely over. But I am resolved to turn those fears over to God and let Him replace those fears with His mercy, grace, love, and assurance. I am resolved to keep moving forward, as scary as it may feel, and as tempted as I am to once again just stand still.
Fear lies to us, convincing us we are alone and hopeless, but God’s faithfulness speaks God’s truth – that He intercedes for us and helps us in our weakness (Romans 8:26), that He is who I depend on, and why I can trust and not be afraid (Isaiah 12:2).
